And it would be a good investment in Indiana and our nation. It would be good for so many hard-working Hoosiers. I encourage you to contact your representatives in Congress and encourage them to support an increase in the maximum Pell Grant award. This investment would also produce a great return for taxpayers because, on average, a college graduate pays $3,660 more per year in state and federal taxes. In short, increasing the Pell Grant is a good investment in our economy.
By reducing the amount of student loans, we will empower our graduates to buy a home sooner or start a new business. An increase in the maximum Pell Grant award will reduce the need for a Ball State student to borrow more money to complete her college education. That result would be beneficial for those students and their families because, on average over a lifetime, a college graduate earns $1 million more than a person who only has a high school diploma. In fact, if Congress were to increase the maximum annual Pell Grant amount, many more students - including students from middle-class families - would be able to obtain a college education with less or no debt. Specifically, Congress should pass legislation to increase the maximum amount of the award that a Pell-eligible student can receive each year. And because this assistance is a grant, not a loan, the student does not have to repay this financial support.īut I believe that Congress should now do more to make a college education accessible to young women and young men in Indiana and to create more financially secure futures. Students from families with less than $40,000 in annual household income are eligible to receive a Pell Grant.
In fact, more than 30% of our undergraduate students qualify for Pell Grants, which is a federal program that was created in 1972. Many of our students are also eligible for federal financial aid. To assist these students, our university provides more than $68 million in institutional aid to our students each year. Our commitment to fiscal discipline enables us to provide this educational opportunity to all students, including those students who are the first in their families to go to college and those students whose families may not have the financial resources to assist with paying tuition and the other costs of enrolling in college. For Indiana residents, our tuition is approximately $8,300 per year, which makes Ball State an excellent investment. And for more than a decade, we have reduced our operating expenses so that we could consistently keep our annual tuition rate increase lower than the rate of inflation and below the recommendation of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Our university continues to fulfill this mission because we provide a high-quality undergraduate educational experience at a very affordable price. This mission has a significant, positive impact on our state, because more than 80 percent of our students are Indiana residents and more than 170,000 Ball State graduates presently live and work in Indiana. For more than 100 years, Ball State University has fulfilled a vital mission: to prepare our students for fulfilling careers and to inspire them to lead meaningful lives.
